ADHCE Monthly Zoom Meeting Meeting

Thurs. Feb 5, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM EST

SPEAKER:  Rick Rader, MD, FAAIDD, FAADM, DHL (hon)

Title of the Presentation: The Role of the Joint Commission’s Sentinel Event Alerts on Disability Education: Opportunities for Clinician and Advocates' Engagement

Description of Presentation

The Joint Commission is a United States-based nonprofit tax-exempt 501(c) organization that accredits more than 22,000 US health care organizations and programs. They issue Sentinel Event Alerts to inform hospitals of potential patient safety concerns that could result in death, permanent harm, or severe temporary harm. Sentinel events can be caused by major mistakes and negligence on the part of a healthcare provider and are closely investigated by healthcare regulatory authorities. Opportunities to propose Sentinel Event Alerts relating to and addressing hospitalized patients with disabilities have recently been encouraged. This presentation outlines the steps taken to accomplish this and its potential impact on individuals with disabilities.

BIO of Speaker  Dr. Rick Rader is a physician specializing in intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is the President of the American Association on Health and Disability and a co-founder of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry. He received a Presidential appointment to the National Council on Disability and co-authored the Healthcare Equity Framework.
