On the First Thursday of every month at 11:30 EST ADHCE provides a networking opportunity to members and interested guests. The monthly meeting includes presentations around current topics of interest, advocacy, and announcements for upcoming events. You can also learn more about the organization and the wonderful work of its members. Students are welcomed.

Title: Critical Perspectives of Health Care Education that Contribute to Health Inequities for People with Disabilities

Description: Dr. Whalen Smith, Dr. Havercamp, and Dr. Kennedy, will provide an overview of their state and national work around promoting anti-ableist training and practice among interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. Dr. Havercamp and Dr. Whalen Smith will provide a brief overview on data they have collected in Ohio from people with disabilities around the need for disability competence training and strategies they have taken to integrate anti-ableist curriculum in Ohio health professional training programs. Dr. Kennedy and Dr. Whalen Smith will speak to national initiatives and models within the physical therapy profession specifically to promote anti-ableist training and clinical practice including changing attitudinal environments to promote disability justice.

Bios:
Dr. Cara Whalen Smith, PT, DPT, MPH, CHES is a public health physical therapist who has expertise in program planning, implementation, evaluation, and community health assessment. She is the Disability Inclusion & Accessibility leader for the Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center where she directs state and national interprofessional healthcare workforce development projects to improve health equity for people with disabilities. She was also a part of the team that worked to establish consensus on the Core Competencies on Disability for Health Care Education and is a founding member of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Academy of Leadership and Innovation Disability Justice and Anti-Ableism Catalyst Group.

Dr. Susan Havercamp PhD, her research focuses on the physical and mental health of adults with disabilities. She has contributed to health surveillance research documenting health and healthcare disparities among disabled adults, adapted and evaluated health promotion programs, and worked to improve healthcare quality through providing disability training to health professionals. A longtime member and past president of the Alliance, Dr. Havercamp contributed to drafting and then refining and validating the Core Competencies on Disability for Health Care Education through a Delphi process with the disability community. Her current work focuses on implementing the core disability competencies in health professional training programs. 

Dr. Winston Kennedy, PT, DPT, MPH, PhD is an assistant professor at Northeastern University with a dual appointment in the Physical Therapy Movement & Rehabilitation Sciences Department and the Public Health & Health Sciences Department. His research focuses on promoting health and access to health resources for underserved communities centered on disability across the lifespan. His work includes an intersectional perspective, considering how racial and ethnic identities contribute to access to health resources. He has expertise in measurement design, mixed-method analysis, disability health, rehabilitation sciences, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. He has received research funding from the NIH, Deborah Munroe Noonan Memorial Research Fund, InterCommunity Health Network Coordinated Care Organization and the NWCOHS Professional Training Opportunities Program.

ADHCE does not collect registration fees for any event and  proudly offers monthly meetings and an annual conference at no additional cost to attendees.
